UN Security Council Extends diamond exports ban on Liberia
The UN Security Council voted October 20 to leave the international ban on rough diamond exports from Liberia in place until the end of the year. The Council indicated that it wants to lift the ban, but they feel President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf must do more to enforce the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, according to the Security Council.
The ban was imposed when former dictator Charles Taylor was using diamond smuggling revenue to finance civil wars in his own country and neighboring Sierra Leone prior to his August 2003 ouster.
